RRT and Code White

Supervisor RRT Responsibilities

  • Respond to the RRT within the 20 minutes response time.
  • Explain to the family the process of the RRT & what they can expect when the team arrives.
  • Listen to the huddle presentation of the RRT case & assess the need for transfer to a higher level of care.
  • Advocate for a higher level of care if the patient is medically stable but due to nursing interventions needs a higher level of care or the medical interventions are out of the unit’s scope of practice.
  •  Help facilitate a bed transfer.
  • Assess the units need for additional staffing/the sending units need to down staff.

Supervisor Code White Responsibilities

  • Respond to daily test page which occurs at noon.
  • Respond to all Code Whites.
  • Maintain crowd control eliminating unnecessary people as needed.
  • Provide support to family with the Chaplin & Social Worker throughout the code.
  • Help facilitate bed transfer as needed.
  • Assist unit with HUSC duties if none available, i.e. Call x-ray, page perfusionist, etc.
  • Continue to perform the usual duties of the BCH Hospital Supervisor unless the role of recorder is delegated to you by a Critical Care Charge RN.
  • Maintain the role of narrator during the entire Code White unless it is absolutely necessary to hand this off. If you must hand-off the recorder responsibility, it should be handed-off to a Critical Care RN that is most familiar with the role. If you hand-off the recorder responsibility, you must follow-up after the code to ensure that the “General Responsibilities” listed below have been met.
    • Ensure all questions are answered accurately & fields are filled-in completely on the code record. Some items may require follow-up with the nursing & medical teams after the code has ended.
  • Debrief with the staff if possible afterwards using the Care for the Caregiver training.
