Draft On-Call Guidelines for Pediatric Access Center

On-Call Staffing Guidelines for Pediatric Access Center:

There is only ONE On-Call opportunity available per shift and this will be granted and approved by management to ensure equitable distribution of On-Call for all staff. If you notice someone has already signed up for a shift, please choose an alternative On-Call shift that is open. Please note, these On-Call shifts can only be assigned during a 24-hr period when the nurse is already off and cannot be in lieu of a scheduled shift.

1. Pediatric Access Center On-Call shifts are 0700-1900 and 1900-0700. If Nurse is only available for partial shift, it will be considered secondary to a Nurse offering full A or P On-Call shift.

2. On-Call communication will be in Slack staffing channel by the Charge Nurse. Please tag the person to notify them re: activating to come in and being released from On-Call Shift.

3. On-Call nurses are expected to arrive at work within 60-minutes from being activated and called-in (flexible to those with longer commutes).

4. Once an On-Call Nurse is called-in to report to work, it is within the Charge Nurse discretion to release the On-Call Nurse if they are no longer needed.

5. Nurses can be released from On-Call after a minimum of 2 hours of being on-call from the start of your shift by the Charge Nurse (this will be based on the call volume, staffing, shift flow). It is within the Charge Nurse discretion to keep someone On-Call for more than 2 hours.

6. Nurses will be compensated according to the collective bargaining agreement (0.5x while on-call, 1.5x when called in). 1.5x on-call pay begins when Nurse arrives in the unit. Once released, 0.5x on-call pay ends.

7. Nursing Supervisor must be notified when On-Call Nurse is called-in or released for situational awareness.

8. Charge Nurse is expected to update the DUMR to reflect On-Call Nurse hours: activated, called-in, and released.

Thank you for your commitment to our team and our patients!
