COVID-19 Tip Sheet for BCH Nursing Supervisors

  1. For up-to-date visitor policy information, refer to the UCSF Visitor Guidelines Policy, updated frequently.
  2. For exceptions to the visitor guidelines OR If a caretaker is COVID-19 exposed or positive and there are questions about when they can return to the bedside, refer them to the Visitor Escalation Committee using the following process:

  • Referrals to the Visitor Escalation Committee can be made via this website. These submissions are checked once per day including on weekends.
  1. Contact tracing for COVID positive healthcare workers is no longer done on nights or weekends. A provider can place an order for novel precautions for a patient with concern for exposure pending an evaluation by HEIP. Caregivers and patients are generally no longer considered “COVID exposed” if in the presence of a COVID positive healthcare worker if the HCW was masked throughout the interaction.
  2. Testing for essential caregivers, including testing at the bedside, can be initiated using this form
  3. If seeking testing on the weekend for a caregiver who has not previously been tested, contact the COVID hotline at (415) 476-6407 and choose option 3. This hotline is staffed from 0800-1400 on weekends. Hotline staff can assist with placing of the testing order, including for testing at the bedside.

  7. COVID testing is provided free of charge to essential caregivers only. Families must complete testing for other visitors, including siblings, independently. Home tests are not acceptable for screening purposes. Visitors and siblings who are UCSF patients can schedule testing using the link above (normal billing will apply).

  8. The current letter provided for all families detailing visitor guidelines is linked here.
